👋 Hello and Bye

Hello and Bye sound like they could go anywhere in a conversation, so a young child sometimes swaps them — the fix is tying each word to one clear moment: meeting, or leaving.

What your child learns

The mistake most kids make here

Saying Bye when we meet.

Try one question

When we meet we say…

When we meet

Answer

Hello — That's it. Meeting = Hello. Bye is for leaving.

How Maya teaches it

Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.

Your child has it when they can: Say Hello to meet and Bye to leave.

How to help at home

Hello (or Hi) is what we say the moment we meet someone. Bye is what we say the moment we leave. They're opposite bookends, not interchangeable greetings.

Practice with a simple game: walk into the room together and say 'Hello!' Then walk back out and say 'Bye!' Repeating the physical action with the word helps the two stick to the right moment.

If your child says 'Bye' when they meet someone, gently ask: 'are we arriving or leaving right now?' Let them correct themselves rather than just supplying the right word.

A good sign they've got it: they say Hello (or Hi) automatically when someone walks in, and Bye automatically when someone walks out, without needing a reminder.

Questions parents ask

Why does my child say Bye when meeting someone?
At this age, the words haven't yet been tied firmly to a specific moment — meeting versus leaving. Practicing the physical action (walking in, walking out) alongside the word helps anchor each one.
Are Hello and Hi the same thing?
Yes — they're both used for the same moment, meeting someone. Either one works.
What's a quick way to practice at home?
Play a simple in-and-out game: walk into the room and say Hello, walk out and say Bye. Repeating it a few times makes the pattern stick.
How does Maya teach this differently from flashcards?
Maya asks what we say the moment we meet someone, with real options, so the child chooses the right word for the right moment instead of just repeating a list of greetings.
