🐾 cat dog bird
At this age, "cat," "dog," and "bird" are still new words attached to new facts, so a child can mix up which animal actually does what — like assuming a dog flies the way a bird does.

Can fly
- dog
- cat
- bird
Answer
bird — Yes. bird, because of the wings.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: Say cat, dog, bird. A bird can fly.
How to help at home
A cat is a small pet that meows. A dog is a pet that barks. A bird is the one that can fly — that's the fact that sets it apart from the other two.
Play a simple sorting game: name an animal and ask "can it fly?" A dog — no. A cat — no. A bird — yes. Repeating the one fact for each animal helps it stick.
If your child says a dog can fly, ask "which of the three has wings?" and let them work out that only the bird does, rather than just correcting them directly.
A good sign of mastery: they say cat, dog, and bird correctly, and can answer "can it fly?" correctly for all three without hesitating.
Questions parents ask
- Why does my child think a dog can fly?
- At this age, the words for animals are still new, and the specific facts attached to each one — barks, meows, flies — haven't fully settled yet, so features can get borrowed from one animal to another.
- What's a simple way to practice at home?
- Ask "can it fly?" about each animal in turn — cat, dog, bird — so the one fact that makes a bird different gets repeated and reinforced.
- Should I use real animals or pictures to teach this?
- Either works, as long as the one distinguishing fact — flying — gets said out loud each time, not just shown silently in a picture.
- How does Maya teach this differently from flashcards?
- Maya asks the child directly which animal can fly, with real options, so the fact gets used to answer a question rather than only memorized as a label.
