English for children learning it at school

Maya teaches English as a second language, from the very first words: numbers, days of the week, a short sentence about the room, present and past. In every lesson she looks for the common mistake and explains why it was tempting.

What English does Maya teach?

44 lessons for children learning English as a second language, from grade 1 to grade 10. First: numbers, family words, days of the week, food with “I like” and “I don’t like”, this and that. Then: “she sits” with an s, “I have” and “she has”, in, on and under, “I can run”. In grade 4: “there is” and “there are”, and English word order. In grade 5: the past tense with -ed, and was and were.

A child who learns in Hebrew gets the explanation in Hebrew, with the English words kept in English, so the rule makes sense in their own language.

How does a lesson with Maya go?

An English lesson with Maya starts from what the class did today — say, “there is” and “there are” — and goes like this:

  • Your child tells Maya what the class learned today, or shows her a photo of the worksheet.
  • Maya teaches that topic with them, in short steps, at their grade.
  • She asks questions they answer with a tap — no typing, no blank page.
  • When an answer is wrong, she does not just say “try again”. She explains why that answer was tempting, and what was missing to reach the right one.
  • She remembers what did not land, and comes back to it in later lessons.

Is Maya right for a child just starting English?

Yes, from the first words. Questions are answered with a tap, so a child who cannot yet write in English can still answer. The lessons suit grades 1 to 6, and the catalog continues to grade 10.

Maya is not a partner for spoken conversation. For speaking practice, a person — a teacher or a conversation group — is the better fit.

What English mistake does Maya catch?

In grade 3, children learn to say what someone is doing now. “She sit on the chair” is the classic slip. It is tempting because “I sit” and “you sit” have no s, so the rule seems to be that the verb never changes.

Maya explains why “sit” felt right, then shows the one thing that changes it: with he, she or it, in the present, the verb takes an s — “she sits”.

Is Maya safe for a young child?

Maya is built for children with a parent nearby, and the rules are written into her legal pages, not just promised on this one.

  • Maya does not ask a child for an email address, a precise location or a friend list.
  • There is no chat between children, no public feed and no ads in the lesson.
  • Lessons that go through a language model stay locked until a parent confirms a link sent to their email.
  • From the parent screen you can pause those lessons and delete the copy kept in the cloud.
  • Children’s information is not sold, and there is no targeted advertising.

The full details are in the children’s privacy notice and the safety page, linked at the bottom of this page.

Maya or a private tutor: which does your child need?

Both help, but they answer different needs. Here they are side by side:

A human tutor is the better choice for exam preparation, for teenagers, for practising a spoken language, and for a child who needs a person beside them. Maya is for the everyday: the evening after school, when a topic did not land and nobody is free to explain it again.

You can also have both: if your child sees a tutor once a week, Maya can cover the other evenings.

Questions parents ask

From which grade does Maya teach English?

The catalog starts at grade 1 and runs to grade 10, in 44 lessons. Maya is made for grades 1 to 6.

Does Maya practise speaking English?

No. Your child answers with a tap, not by speaking. For conversation practice, a human teacher or a conversation group is the better choice.

How can I help with English at home?

Put English labels on things around the house and use them in short sentences: “The chair is by the door.” When your child mixes up the word order, ask how the sentence sounds in your home language — that is usually where the mix-up comes from.

Is the first lesson free?

Yes. The first lesson is free, and no card is needed. After that, Maya Plus is a subscription for more lessons.
