🪢 Because but then
כי, אבל, and אז each set up a different relationship between two halves of a sentence — but a child treating every connector as just 'and then' can swap אבל in for ו without noticing the sentence's meaning flips.

- A connector tells you the relation between the two halves of a sentence.
- כי gives a reason: the second half explains the first.
- אבל marks contrast: the second half pulls the other way.
- אז leads onward, to what followed from it.
The mistake most kids make here
Swapping אבל for ו, as if everything just continues.
Try one question
רציתי מים אבל אין. What does אבל say?
אבל
- contrast
- just and
- a question
Answer
contrast — Yes. אבל sets two sides that collide.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: What does אבל do that ו cannot, and what does כי give?
How to help at home
This isn't a vocabulary gap — she knows all three words. She hasn't yet noticed that each one does a different job: כי explains, אבל contrasts, אז moves forward — and using the wrong one changes what the sentence actually says.
Tonight, say a sentence like 'רציתי מים אבל אין' and ask “does the second part agree with the first part, or push against it?” before naming which connector fits.
If she swaps אבל for ו, read the sentence both ways aloud and ask “which one sounds like it's pulling in a different direction?” so she hears the contrast, not just the grammar rule.
A good sign she has it: she can pick the right connector — כי, אבל, or אז — for a new sentence by checking what relationship it needs, not by guessing.
Questions parents ask
- Why does my child use ו instead of אבל?
- She's treating every connector as just continuing the sentence, without noticing that אבל specifically signals contrast. Asking whether the second half agrees or pushes against the first targets that gap.
- What's the simplest way to explain the difference between כי and אז?
- כי explains why something happened — it points backward to a cause. אז says what happened next as a result — it points forward. Reading the sentence in the order of real time usually makes it clear.
- Is this similar to learning 'but,' 'because,' and 'so' in English?
- Yes — the same three relationships (contrast, cause, result) show up with those English words, so a child who has one language down can transfer the logic to the other.
- How does Maya teach this differently?
- Maya asks what relationship the sentence needs — agreement, contrast, or a reason — before naming the connector, so the child practices the underlying logic instead of memorizing which word to use.
