🌳 A word family
A Hebrew word family shares a three-letter root running through every member — כתב, מכתב, כתיבה — but a child scanning quickly sometimes groups words that merely start with the same letter, missing the root that actually ties them together.

- A word family shares a body of letters that repeats in all of them.
- כתב, מכתב and כתיבה all carry כ-ת-ב.
- The meaning stays close too: writing is in all of them.
- A shared first letter is not enough, and is not required either.
The mistake most kids make here
Any word starting with the same letter counts as family.
Try one question
Which word belongs to the family of כתב?
In the family
- מכתב
- חלון
- שולחן
Answer
מכתב — Yes. The same letters inside, and the same idea.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: What do כתב, מכתב and כתיבה share, and why is חלון out?
How to help at home
This isn't a spelling issue — she can read every word in the family correctly. She's sorting by the most visible clue, the first letter, instead of the real one: the three root letters repeated inside.
Tonight, write כתב, מכתב, and כתיבה together and ask her to point to the same three letters hiding inside each one — כ-ת-ב — before talking about what they mean.
If she includes a word that only shares the first letter, like חלון, ask “does the whole root show up in here, not just the first letter?” so she checks the full pattern, not just the start.
A good sign she has it: she can take a new root and correctly pick its family members out of a mixed list, rejecting words that only share the first letter.
Questions parents ask
- Why does my child group words by first letter instead of root?
- The first letter is the most visible clue, so it becomes the shortcut. Asking her to point to all three root letters inside each word, not just the first, targets the actual pattern.
- How many letters are in a typical Hebrew root?
- Most Hebrew roots have three letters, and they can appear in different orders and with different letters added around them across the word family.
- Does meaning always match within a word family?
- Usually the meaning stays related across a root family, which is a good double-check alongside spotting the shared letters.
- How does Maya teach this differently?
- Maya asks the child to point out the shared root letters inside each candidate word, so grouping by meaning-bearing root gets practiced instead of grouping by first letter.
