〰️ A comma in a list

A Hebrew list needs a comma between most items but switches to ו right before the last one — 'תפוח, בננה ואגס' — and a child who has just learned commas often uses them straight through instead.

What your child learns

The mistake most kids make here

Putting only commas even before the last fruit, with no ו.

Try one question

Which list is written the right way?

A list

Answer

תפוח, בננה ואגס — Yes. תפוח, בננה ואגס — that is correct.

How Maya teaches it

Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.

Your child has it when they can: תפוח, בננה ואגס — not only תפוח, בננה, אגס.

How to help at home

This isn't a comma mistake exactly — she has correctly learned that items in a list get separated. What's missing is that the very last item gets a different word, ו, instead of one more comma.

Tonight, make a short list together — three foods, three toys — and write it out loud, pausing right before the last item: “here, instead of a comma, we say ו.”

If she writes commas all the way through, circle the spot before the last item and ask “what goes here instead of a comma?” rather than just adding the ו for her.

A good sign she has it: she can write a new three-item list on her own and land the ו in the right spot without prompting.

Questions parents ask

Why does my child put a comma before the last item in a list?
She has correctly learned the comma rule for the middle of a list but hasn't yet learned that the last item switches to ו instead. Practicing the pause right before the last word targets that specific spot.
Does every Hebrew list need ו before the last item?
Yes, this is the standard pattern for a written list of items — a comma between the earlier items, then ו before the final one.
Is this similar to the Oxford comma debate in English?
Not quite — in Hebrew the ו before the last item isn't optional the way an Oxford comma is; it's the expected way to close a list.
How does Maya teach this differently?
Maya asks what comes right before the last item in a list the child writes, so the ו gets practiced at the exact spot it's needed.
