🍕 A pizza and a half

A mixed number like "one and a half" is really two different amounts glued together in writing, and a child who hasn't unpacked that will sometimes just glue the digits too — writing "11/2" instead of the "3/2" that means the same thing.

What your child learns

The mistake most kids make here

Gluing the numbers together instead of working with them.

Try one question

One whole and a half. How many halves is that?

A whole and a half

Answer

3/2 — Yes. Three halves in all.

How Maya teaches it

Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.

Your child has it when they can: Why does a whole and a half equal three halves?

How to help at home

The key idea is that a whole thing can always be re-cut into pieces the same size as whatever fraction you're working with — a whole pizza can become two halves, or three thirds, or four quarters, without becoming more or less pizza.

Use a real pizza, orange, or chocolate bar cut into halves. Show one whole one plus a half of another, and ask how many half-pieces that is in total if you cut the whole one in half too — then count all the half-pieces together.

When your child glues the numbers into something like "11/2", say: "let's cut the whole one into halves too, and count every half-piece" and physically do the cutting and counting rather than explaining the rule first.

A sign they've got it: they can turn any whole number into fraction pieces of a given size before adding — for example, knowing that one whole is four quarters when a problem is in quarters.

Questions parents ask

Why does my child write "one and a half" as 11/2 instead of 3/2?
They're combining the digits the way they look written down, without first turning the whole one into halves. Cutting a real whole object into the same-size pieces as the fraction shows why 3/2 is correct.
What age are mixed numbers usually taught?
Mixed numbers typically come in grade 5, after a child already has a solid sense of simple fractions like halves, thirds, and quarters.
Do mixed numbers and improper fractions mean the same thing?
Yes — "one and a half" and "three halves" describe exactly the same amount, just written two different ways; converting between them is the whole skill being practiced here.
How does Maya teach mixed numbers?
Maya has the child convert the whole part into pieces of the same size as the fraction before adding, so the total comes from counting matching pieces rather than combining digits.
