🔵 Round to ten
A child who rounds 47 down to 40, or isn't sure which way 35 goes, hasn't yet built a clear picture of which ten a number is actually closer to.

- Look at the ones digit.
- 0–4 stay on the ten below. 47? Ones are 7 → 50.
- 5–9 step up to the next ten. 42? Ones are 2 → 40.
- Exactly 5 goes up: 35 → 40.
The mistake most kids make here
Always rounding down, or forgetting 5 goes up.

47 rounded to the nearest ten?

Answer
50 — Yes. 7 is above 5, so you step up to the next ten.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: 47→50, 42→40, and 35 steps up to 40.
How to help at home
Rounding asks a child to judge distance, not just read a digit, and "closer to which ten" isn't obvious without a way to see the two options side by side.
Draw a number line from 40 to 50 on paper or with sidewalk chalk. Mark 47 on it and ask your child to count the steps back to 40 versus forward to 50. Walking it out physically — or hopping along a chalk line — makes "closer" a distance you can feel, not just a rule to memorize.
When your child always rounds down, or rounds 35 down to 30 instead of up to 40, ask: "is this number exactly in the middle, or a little past it?" For 35, it's exactly in the middle, and the rule is that ties round up — worth stating clearly as its own case.
A sign they've got it: given 44 and 46 back to back, they round the first down to 40 and the second up to 50 without hesitating, because they're judging the ones digit each time rather than applying one direction out of habit.
Questions parents ask
- Why does my child always round down?
- Rounding down can feel like the "safe" or default choice if a child isn't yet checking the ones digit each time. Practicing pairs of numbers that round in opposite directions — like 44 and 46 — breaks that habit.
- Which way does a number like 35 round?
- Up, to 40. When the ones digit is exactly 5, the standard rule is to round up to the next ten. It's worth teaching this as its own special case rather than assuming it follows the general pattern.
- What's a hands-on way to practice rounding?
- A number line, drawn or chalked outside, where your child physically counts or hops the steps to each nearby ten and compares which distance is shorter.
- How does Maya teach rounding to the nearest ten?
- Maya has the child compare the distance to each neighboring ten before rounding, so the answer comes from judging closeness rather than from a memorized direction.
