🕕 Half past
Once a child learns that the long hand points at numbers, it's a short step to the mistake of reading whatever number it's on as the hour — so "long hand on 6" gets called "six o'clock".

- Long on 12 = o'clock. Long on 6 = half past.
- The short hand moves slowly. At half past it sits between hours.
- Half past two = short hand after the 2.
- Don't call it 6 just because the long hand is there.
The mistake most kids make here
Reading long-hand-on-6 as six o'clock.
Try one question
Long hand on 6 means…
Long on 6
- 6 o'clock
- half past
- quarter
Answer
half past — Yes. The long hand says minutes. On 6 = 30 minutes = half.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: Long on 6, short between 2 and 3 — what time?
How to help at home
This mistake usually shows up right after o'clock is mastered, because the child has just learned to trust numbers on the clock face — and hasn't yet learned that the long hand's numbers mean something different from the short hand's.
On a paper or toy clock, set the short hand between two numbers — say between 2 and 3 — and the long hand on 6. Ask what time it is, and let your child notice the short hand isn't sitting on a number the way it does at o'clock.
When your child reads the long hand on 6 as "six", say: "the long hand tells minutes, not hours — on 6 it means thirty minutes" and point to where the short hand actually is, between the two hours.
A sign they've got it: they check the short hand's position between two numbers first, and use the long hand only to say "and a half", instead of naming an hour straight from wherever the long hand points.
Questions parents ask
- Why does my child call "half past two" something like "six o'clock"?
- They're applying the o'clock rule — read the number the hand points to — to the wrong hand. Once they see the short hand sitting between two numbers rather than on one, half past starts to make sense.
- What should my child already know before learning half past?
- A solid grip on whole o'clock times first — knowing that the short hand says the hour and the long hand on 12 means o'clock — makes half past much easier to add on top.
- How can I practice half past without a real clock?
- A paper clock face with movable card hands works well: set the long hand to 6 and move the short hand to different positions between hour numbers, asking your child what time it shows each time.
- How does Maya teach half past the hour?
- Maya asks what the long hand means before asking for the full time, so the child practices translating the long hand into minutes rather than treating it as another hour number.
