❓ A question mark

A child who has just learned that sentences end with a period sometimes applies that rule everywhere, including after a question, because 'the sentence is done' feels like the whole rule.

What your child learns

The mistake most kids make here

Putting a period even when asking, because the sentence is done.

Try one question

מה זה? Which mark at the end?

End mark

Answer

a question mark — Yes. The sentence asks, so it gets a question mark.

How Maya teaches it

Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.

Your child has it when they can: מה זה? gets ?. זה חתול. gets a period.

How to help at home

This isn't carelessness — she has correctly learned that every sentence needs an end mark. What's missing is the second question: is this sentence asking, or telling?

Tonight, read a few sentences aloud together and ask before writing the end mark: “am I asking something here, or telling something?” Words like מה and מי are a useful flag to watch for.

If she writes a period after a question, don't just swap the mark — ask “does this sentence want an answer?” so she checks the sentence's job, not just its length.

A good sign she has it: she can sort a mixed list of questions and statements by ear, choosing the right end mark for each without help.

Questions parents ask

Why does my child put a period after a question?
She has learned that a finished sentence needs an end mark, but hasn't yet separated “finished” from “asking.” Asking “is this sentence asking or telling?” before she writes the mark targets the actual gap.
Are מה and מי always the start of a question?
Often, but not always — they can also open a statement. The real test is whether the sentence expects an answer, not just which word opens it.
At what age should this be automatic?
Most children sort question marks from periods reliably by the end of grade 2 with regular practice reading both types aloud.
How does Maya teach this differently?
Maya asks whether the sentence is asking or telling before naming the end mark, so the child practices the actual distinction instead of guessing.
