🪧 A short sign
A child learning to read a short sign needs to sound out the actual letters in order — guessing the word from a picture nearby skips the reading altogether.

- Read the letters in order.
- Don't guess from the picture beside it.
- מ-י-ם is מים, not דלת.
- A different letter swaps the word: לחם is not חלב.
The mistake most kids make here
Guessing from a picture instead of reading letters.

What is written
- מים
- דלת
- חלון
Answer
מים — That's it. מ then י then ם = מים.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: Read a three-letter sign without guessing.
How to help at home
Guessing from a picture is a natural first strategy for a young child, but it isn't reading — it's picture interpretation. The goal is to build the habit of looking only at the letters, in order, until the word emerges from them.
Cover up any picture next to a word (a cereal box, a sign, a book cover) and have your child read just the letters, one at a time, out loud: מ... י... ם. Then reveal the picture and check if it matches what they read.
When your child guesses a word before finishing the letters (saying "door!" for a sign that says מים, prompted by a picture of water bottles nearby, say), cover the picture again and ask them to read only the letters from the start.
A sign they've got it: they can read an unfamiliar three-letter word correctly with no picture at all, purely from sounding out each letter in order.
Questions parents ask
- Why does my child guess instead of reading the letters?
- Guessing from context is faster and often works when a child was already read the book, so it feels like reading. Covering the picture removes that shortcut and forces real letter-by-letter reading.
- How many letters should a beginner sign have?
- Start with three-letter words the child already knows how to sound out, like מים or דלת, before moving to longer or less familiar signs.
- What if my child reads the letters correctly but too slowly to blend them?
- That's a normal stage — keep the letters visible and have them repeat the sounds faster each time, blending two letters together before adding the third.
- How does Maya teach reading a short sign?
- Maya has the child sound out each letter in order before confirming the word, so meaning comes from the letters themselves rather than from a picture alongside them.
