🏳️ Blue and white
This comes from first grade homeland studies in Israel, where children learn to recognize their national flag by its two colors, blue and white, the same way a child anywhere first learns a flag by color before learning anything else about it.

- On the flag we see white.
- The two colours together: blue and white.
- There is no red or green on the flag.
The mistake most kids make here
Thinking the flag is red or green like some other flags.
Try one question
Which colours are on the flag?
Flag colours
- red and green
- blue and white
- yellow and black
Answer
blue and white — That's it. The flag is blue and white. Not red, not green.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: Say the two colours on the flag.
How to help at home
The flag your child is learning about is Israel's national flag: two horizontal blue stripes near the top and bottom, and a blue six-pointed star in the middle, all on a white background. At six, the lesson is just the two colors, not the symbol yet.
If you're outside Israel, you can still practice this the same way any flag gets learned early: look up a picture together, say the colors out loud, and let your child point to a real one if you spot it at a store or a school event.
Mix it up with a flag your child already knows well, so the two don't blur — compare it with whichever flag is familiar at home, so different flag, different colors becomes the whole point at this age.
A good sign they've got it: shown a few color pairs, they pick blue and white without hesitating, and they don't reach for red or green, which don't belong to this flag.
Questions parents ask
- Why is my child learning about Israel's flag in an English lesson?
- This topic comes from the homeland studies part of the Israeli school curriculum, which every child in an Israeli school learns regardless of the language spoken at home.
- What are the actual colors of Israel's flag?
- Blue and white: two blue stripes on a white background, with a blue six-pointed star, a Star of David, in the center. At this age the lesson is just the two colors.
- How can I help if we don't live in Israel and rarely see this flag?
- Look up a picture together online, say the two colors out loud a few times, and compare it with a flag your child already knows so the colors don't get mixed up.
- How does Maya teach this?
- Maya asks which colors are on the flag and offers a few color pairs to choose from, so the child locks in blue and white specifically, rather than guessing from flags seen elsewhere.
