🔢 Rational
A child who first meets the word "rational" alongside fraction examples may assume whole numbers and decimals are excluded, because the examples they saw all had a slash in them.

- A rational number can be written as a fraction of two whole numbers.
- Every whole number is rational, because it can sit over one.
- A decimal that ends or repeats is rational, because it can be turned into a fraction.
- Numbers like pi are not rational, because their digits never end and never repeat.
The mistake most kids make here
Thinking only fractions are rational.
Try one question
Is 4 a rational number?
The number 4
- yes
- no
- only if it is written as a fraction
Answer
yes — That's it. A whole number is a fraction with one underneath.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: Say why 4 is a rational number.
How to help at home
A rational number is simply any number that can be written as a fraction of two whole numbers — that definition quietly includes whole numbers and many decimals, not just numbers already written with a slash.
Take a whole number your child knows, like 4, and ask them to write it as a fraction — 4 over 1 works, and it is still exactly 4. That one small exercise shows whole numbers fit the definition.
Do the same with a simple decimal like 0.5, turning it into 1/2, and with a repeating decimal if your child is ready, showing that it too can be rewritten as a fraction of whole numbers.
A sign they have it: given a whole number or a simple decimal, they can rewrite it as a fraction on their own and explain why that makes it rational.
Questions parents ask
- Why does my child think only fractions are rational numbers?
- The examples used to introduce the term are usually fractions, so the word can get attached to that one shape of number instead of to the broader rule behind it.
- What is a simple way to check if a number is rational?
- Try to write it as a fraction of two whole numbers — if you can, no matter how it was originally written, it is rational.
- Are all decimals rational?
- Decimals that end or repeat are rational, because they can be rewritten as fractions; decimals that go on forever without repeating, like pi, are not.
- How does Maya teach rational numbers?
- Maya has the child rewrite whole numbers and simple decimals as fractions themselves, so the definition is confirmed by their own examples rather than stated as a rule.
