🎯 Segment midpoint
The midpoint of a segment is the average of its two endpoints — not their difference, which only tells you the segment's length.

- A midpoint is the same distance from both ends of a segment.
- Add the two ends and halve, which is exactly what an average does.
- In two dimensions it is done twice, once for each axis.
- Subtracting gives the length of the segment, not where its middle lies.
The mistake most kids make here
Subtracting the ends instead of averaging them.

Answer
6 — That's it. Four from each side — the same distance to both ends.
How Maya teaches it
Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.
Your child has it when they can: Say the midpoint between 2 and 10.
How to help at home
Averaging two numbers means adding them and dividing by two — and that's exactly what finding a midpoint does, because the midpoint sits the same distance from both ends.
Use a real ruler or tape measure: mark 2 cm and 10 cm on a strip of paper. Ask your child to find the exact middle by measuring, then compare that to (2 + 10) ÷ 2. They should match: 6.
When your child subtracts instead (10 − 2 = 8), point out that 8 is the segment's whole length, not its middle — ask "if the middle were at 8, would it really be the same distance from both 2 and 10?" Let them check and see it isn't.
A sign they've got it: given two endpoint numbers, they add and halve automatically, and can explain why that's different from subtracting to find the length.
Questions parents ask
- Why do you add and divide by two instead of subtracting?
- The midpoint needs to be equally far from both ends. Adding the two numbers and halving finds that balance point; subtracting only tells you the total distance between the ends, not where the middle is.
- How do I find a midpoint on a coordinate grid, with x and y?
- Do it twice — once for the x-coordinates and once for the y-coordinates — averaging each pair separately to get the midpoint's x and y.
- What's the difference between a segment's length and its midpoint?
- Length is the distance between the two ends (found by subtracting); the midpoint is the point exactly halfway between them (found by averaging), and the two numbers are almost never the same.
- How does Maya teach segment midpoints?
- Maya has the child check the midpoint against both endpoints by measuring, so they can see for themselves it's equally far from each side, not just apply a formula.
