💭 because

Because and when both connect two halves of a sentence, but because answers why something happened while when answers only at what point — mixing them up is an easy trap at this age.

What your child learns

The mistake most kids make here

Using because when the answer is a time rather than a reason.

Try one question

We sit because we are tired. Which is right?

Because tired

Answer

I sit because I am tired — Yes. because and then a whole reason.

How Maya teaches it

Your child tells Maya what they did in class. She teaches this topic at her desk, asks questions with tappable answers, and when the answer is wrong she explains why that answer was tempting instead of saying “try again”. She remembers what did not land and comes back to it.

Your child has it when they can: Which question does because answer, and which does when?

How to help at home

Because gives a reason: 'I sit because I am tired' answers the question why. When gives a time: 'I sit when the song ends' answers the question when.

A quick test: ask 'why?' after the sentence. If the second half answers why, because is right. If it only tells you a moment in time, when is right.

Try a few pairs out loud: 'I eat because I am hungry' versus 'I eat when the bell rings.' Notice how the second half changes the meaning.

A good sign they've got it: before choosing the word, they can tell you whether they're giving a reason or naming a moment.

Questions parents ask

Why does my child use because when they mean a time?
Both words connect two parts of a sentence, so at this age it's easy to reach for whichever one comes to mind first without checking whether the second half is a reason or a moment.
How can I quickly check if because is the right word?
Ask 'why?' after the sentence. If the answer explains a reason, because fits. If it only names a time, when is the right word instead.
What usually comes after because in a sentence?
A full reason, as a complete idea: 'because I am tired,' not just a single word like 'because tired.'
How does Maya teach this?
Maya gives a real sentence and asks the child to choose between because and when based on whether the second half is a reason or a time, so the distinction gets practiced in context.
